Joy von Winckelmann & Eddie van Dongen
Co-founders, The Sound Healing School
Joy’s path into sound started with the body. She trained in dance from age 11, studied musical theatre, and spent years on stage before yoga took her to India and changed everything. Today her work is about holding space for people. She has spent over ten years teaching yoga, somatics and embodiment, and the last seven going deep into sound. Her strength lies in weaving the two together, through sound baths and through movement and sound combined, always guided by what people’s nervous systems need in the moment.
Eddie studied drums at the conservatory. He’s a professional drummer who tours widely, and he runs a successful drum coaching company. Through years of playing and teaching he found that music does the most when you listen with your whole body, not just your ears. He’s also a meditation teacher, and he brings the musical structure underneath the work: rhythm, pacing, and knowing why you play what you play.
Together they began creating yoga sessions with live music eight years ago. Countless sessions and retreats later, that work grew into The Sound Healing School. What makes their teaching different is the combination: Eddie knows how music works, Joy knows how the body responds, and their students learn both. Through their Embodied Sounds Method®, which brings professional musicianship, somatic practice and nervous system science together, practitioners learn to read the room, understand the musical language of their instruments, and design sessions with intention instead of guesswork. With 20 years of music, more than 1,000 sessions led and over 120 practitioners trained across Europe, the UK and the US, their certified trainings run from first foundations to advanced mentorship. They are Meinl Sonic Energy ambassadors, and their mission is to raise the standard of sound work, so practitioners don’t just feel sound but truly understand it.
