As autumn unfolds, I find myself reflecting on how we begin projects with zeal, then one day let them go. Like trees whose sap rises in spring—fueling new budding leaves and flowers—only to have that sap recede in autumn, causing once-vibrant foliage to drop, enrich the earth, and create new nutrition for future growth.
The word “leaves” reflects nature’s process. Just as a tree pulls back nutrients and sheds its leaves, we too “leave” behind old dreams, ideas, and pursuits when our attention shifts away. Think of all the passions you have thrown yourself into—sports, art, hobbies—that once felt central, but now scarcely stir your thoughts. Most are discarded, like autumn leaves. Their physical traces may lie in attics, basements, or the homes of others. But what about the energy you invested? Did it vanish? Not at all.
Every endeavor leaves its trace. Like the rings in a tree trunk—formed by each season’s growth—our efforts exist in our energy field, formed by the processes of our mind, emotions, and deeds.
The word “regenerate” is an anagram of “a green tree.” We are that tree. With each season of new endeavors, each fresh surge of inspiration, we grow. Even when the leaves fall, the rings remain. So do the effects of our past—even when the visible signs are gone.
We could, in truth, say:
The sap in the tree
The blood within me
Both are a part of
Creation’s harmony.
Although the leaves may disappear
With each succeeding year
As fresh power we generate
The rings of life accumulate
And at our core
We hold a store
Of all that went before.
As autumn unfolds, let’s remember: a tree holding on to old leaves is unnatural. Nature shows us how to live. Letting go makes room for what is new. Let each leaf of our old endeavors gently float down so that what is new may rise. The energy that supports new ideas and new possibilities flows through us only when we are open, have made space, and are ready to engage.
